Germany and France Seek to Preserve Internal Combustion Engine Cars

October 8, 2026Diego Herrera1 мин

Germany and France are collaborating on a joint stance to significantly revise the planned 2035 ban on new internal combustion engine vehicles within the European Union. This initiative follows their recent agreement on a tougher stance regarding China's policies. The proposed compromise appears to involve Germany conceding to France's industrial policy preferences in exchange for greater flexibility on the vehicle ban. However, Germany's Social Democratic Party (SPD) still intends to uphold the original ban.

Under current regulations, the EU mandates a 100 percent reduction in CO₂ emissions for all new cars sold in the EU by 2035, compared to 2021 levels.
